About the Festival
The Thimphu Tshechu is Bhutan’s largest and most grand religious festival, held annually at Tashichho Dzong in the capital city. This three-day celebration attracts thousands of devotees and visitors from around the world.
What Makes This Festival Special?
The Thongdrel Unfurling At dawn on the final day, a giant Thongdrel (sacred appliqué scroll) is unfurled inside the dzong. This massive thangka is considered so sacred that simply seeing it brings liberation.

Daily Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Paro
Arrive at Paro International Airport. Your guide will greet you with a traditional khata scarf. Transfer to Thimphu (1 hour drive). Evening stroll through Thimphu town.
Day 2: Thimphu Valley Exploration
Visit Tashichho Dzong (seat of government), Memorial Chorten, Buddha Point, and Takin Reserve. Evening briefing about the festival.
Day 3: Thimphu Tshechu - Day 1
First day of the festival! Witness the opening ceremonies and traditional cham dances performed by monks and laypeople.
Day 4: Thimphu Tshechu - Day 2
Main festival day with the Zhana Cham (Dance of the Black Hats) and other sacred dances. Your guide explains the spiritual significance.
Day 5: Thimphu Tshechu - Day 3
Final day with the Thongdrel unfurling at dawn and special ceremonies. Evening cultural show with traditional performances.
Day 6: Transfer to Paro
Drive to Paro via the scenic Dochula Pass. Visit the famous Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple). Continue to Paro.
Day 7: Paro Valley Exploration
Visit Ta Dzong (National Museum), Kyichu Lhakhang (one of Bhutan's oldest temples), and Rinpung Dzong.
Day 8: Tiger's Nest Trek
Hike to the iconic Taktsang Palphug (Tiger's Nest) monastery clinging to a cliff. Visit the sacred cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated.
Day 9: Departure
Final breakfast and transfer to Paro International Airport for your flight home. Tashi delek (safe journey)!
