Arrival in Paro (2,250m)
Arrive at Paro International Airport. Traditional welcome ceremony with butter tea and khata (silk scarf) offering. Transfer to boutique hotel. Evening orientation about your journey through the Dragon Kingdom. Welcome dinner featuring Bhutanese cuisine at a local farmhouse.
Paro - Tiger's Nest & Cultural Sites
Morning hike to the iconic Taktsang Palphug (Tiger's Nest) monastery perched on a cliff at 3,120m. This sacred site is where Guru Rinpoche meditated for three years on a tigress. Afternoon visit to Rinpung Dzong, Ta Dzong National Museum, and the ancient Kyichu Lhakhang temple.
Paro to Thimphu via Haa Valley
Scenic drive to Haa Valley through Chele La Pass (3,988m) - Bhutan's highest motorable pass with stunning Himalayan views. Explore the remote and pristine Haa Valley with its traditional lifestyle. Visit Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo temples. Continue to Thimphu (2,350m) for overnight.
Thimphu - Capital Exploration
Full day in Bhutan's capital. Visit the magnificent Buddha Dordenma (169ft bronze statue), Tashichho Dzong (seat of government), National Memorial Chorten, and the Motithang Takin Preserve. Browse the Weekend Market (Fri-Sun), visit the School of Traditional Arts, and see the 13 traditional crafts being practiced.
Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass
Drive over spectacular Dochula Pass (3,100m) with 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens and stunning panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas on clear days. Descend to subtropical Punakha Valley (1,250m). Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers - considered Bhutan's most beautiful fortress.
Punakha Valley - Divine Madman & Wellness
Morning visit to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple dedicated to the Divine Madman (Lama Drukpa Kunley). Afternoon hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Chorten for panoramic valley views. Evening experience a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (Dotsho) - perfect for relaxation and wellness.
Punakha to Phobjikha Valley
Drive through Wangdue to the glacial Phobjikha Valley (2,900m). Visit Gangtey Goemba monastery and learn about the valley's unique ecology. Phobjikha is winter home to the rare black-necked cranes (October-March). Evening nature walk through the valley with stunning sunset views over the wetlands.
Phobjikha to Trongsa
Morning visit to the Black-Necked Crane information center (seasonal). Drive across Pele La Pass (3,390m) separating western and central Bhutan. Descend to Trongsa (2,300m) and visit the massive Trongsa Dzong - the ancestral home of Bhutan's royal family. Visit the Ta Dzong watchtower museum.
Trongsa to Bumthang - Cultural Heartland
Drive to Bumthang (2,800m) - Bhutan's cultural and spiritual heartland. Visit Yathra weaving center in Chumey valley to see traditional wool weaving. Arrive in Jakar and check into your hotel. Bumthang consists of four sacred valleys with countless ancient temples and monasteries.
Bumthang Sacred Sites - Kurje Lhakhang
Visit Kurje Lhakhang where Guru Rinpoche meditated, leaving body imprint on a rock. See Jambay Lhakhang with its 7th-century origins and the future Buddha statue. Visit Kencho Sum Lhakhang and Tamshing Lhakhang with ancient Buddhist paintings. Evening walk to Jakar Dzong (Castle of the White Bird).
Bumthang Valley Exploration
Full day exploring the sacred Bumthang valleys. Visit Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake) - where Pema Lingpa discovered hidden treasures in the 15th century. Explore Tang Valley - the most remote valley with traditional villages and Ugyen Choling Palace. Visit a local farmhouse for authentic Bhutanese hospitality and ara (local spirit) tasting.
Bumthang to Thimphu
Scenic drive back through the mountains to Thimphu. Stop at the Yathra weaving center in Chumey to purchase beautiful traditional textiles. Continue through Trongsa and Wangdue. Arrive in Thimphu in the evening. Farewell dinner at a fine dining restaurant featuring Bhutanese cuisine.
Thimphu Free Day & Last-Minute Shopping
Free day to explore Thimphu at your own pace. Visit the Post Office to collect Bhutan's beautiful stamps, browse handicraft shops for traditional textiles, thangkas, and Dharma arts. Optional visit to the Takin Preserve or Zilukha Nunnery. Final souvenir hunting and packing assistance from your guide.
Departure from Paro
Morning drive back to Paro (1 hour). Final packing and hotel checkout. Last-minute shopping in Paro for any souvenirs missed. Traditional Bhutanese farewell lunch with your guide. Transfer to Paro International Airport for your departure flight with incredible memories of two weeks in the Last Shangri-La.
