Tour Overview

Journey of the Second Buddha

Guru Padmasambhava, known as Guru Rinpoche (“Precious Teacher”) in Bhutan, is revered as the “Second Buddha” who established Vajrayana Buddhism in the Himalayas. This sacred pilgrimage traces his spiritual journey from Bodh Gaya—where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment—to the hidden valleys of Bhutan where Guru Rinpoche meditated, subdued spirits, and built temples that stand to this day.

The Sacred Bodh Gaya Connection

Bodh Gaya and Bhutan share an unbreakable spiritual bond spanning over 1,200 years. It was from the teachings that originated at the Mahabodhi Temple that Guru Rinpoche carried the light of Dharma to Bhutan in 746 AD, invited by King Minyak Traktsen.

The NEW Nyingmapa Lhakhang (January 2025): This newly consecrated temple in Bodh Gaya strengthens the ancient connection between India and Bhutan. It houses:

  • Rare relics of Guru Padmasambhava
  • Murals depicting his journey from Bodh Gaya to Bhutan
  • Sacred texts from the Nyingma tradition
  • Meditation hall overlooking the Mahabodhi Temple

Why This Pilgrimage?

Authentic Lineage: Visit sites where Guru Rinpoche actually meditated, not just stories but living temples where his blessings continue.

Kurje Lhakhang: See the actual rock where Guru Rinpoche meditated and left his body imprint - one of Bhutan’s most sacred relics.

Tiger’s Nest: THE sacred cave where Guru Rinpoche flew on a tigress (manifestation of Yeshe Tsogyal), subdued local demons, and established Buddhism in Bhutan.

Living Tradition: Meet practitioners of the Nyingma school - the oldest Buddhist tradition in Bhutan, directly tracing to Guru Rinpoche.

Perfect For:

  • Buddhist practitioners and followers of Nyingma tradition
  • Spiritual seekers interested in Tibetan Buddhism
  • Pilgrims who have visited Bodh Gaya and seek to complete the journey
  • Those interested in Guru Rinpoche’s life and teachings
  • Meditation practitioners wanting to practice at sacred sites

The Bodh Gaya Extension (Optional)

Begin your pilgrimage where it all began - under the Bodhi tree where enlightenment first occurred. The 3-day extension includes:

  1. Meditation under the Bodhi Tree - Direct transmission site
  2. Nyingmapa Lhakhang - NEW temple opened January 2025 with Guru Rinpoche relics
  3. Mahabodhi Temple Ceremonies - Participate in daily rituals
  4. Nalanda Ruins - Visit the ancient Buddhist university

This extension creates a complete spiritual arc: from the source of enlightenment (Bodh Gaya) to its flourishing in the Land of the Thunder Dragon (Bhutan).

Day-by-Day Spiritual Focus

Each day of this journey corresponds to a phase of Guru Rinpoche’s life and teachings:
