Phobjikha Valley

A U-shaped glacial valley that transforms each winter when black-necked cranes arrive from Tibet. This is one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and ecologically significant places.

What Makes Phobjikha Special

The Black-Necked Cranes

From November to March, these endangered birds make Phobjikha their winter home. Local tradition says the cranes circle the Gangtey Monastery three times upon arrival and again before departing - a sign of respect.

Best viewing: November (arrival) and February (mating dances)

Crane etiquette:

• Maintain 100m distance
• No drones or flash photography
• Wear neutral colors
• Remain quiet during observation

Gangtey Monastery

Perched on a hill overlooking the valley, this 17th-century Nyingma monastery is one of Bhutan’s most important. The main building houses sacred relics and beautiful murals.

Must see: The evening puja (prayer ceremony) at 5 PM

Village Life

Traditional Farming

Phobjikha is Bhutan’s potato capital. In autumn, the valley turns into a patchwork of potato fields. Many families supplement income with:

• Turnip farming - Second crop after potatoes
• Cattle herding - Yak and cattle crossbreeds
• Crane conservation - Some villagers work as crane guardians

Traditional Houses

The valley’s farmhouses are distinctive:

• Wood construction with rammed earth walls
• Small windows (conservation requirement - to protect cranes)
• Two stories with separate winter/summer living areas

1. Crane Viewing with Local Expert

Join a crane conservationist at dawn to watch the birds leave their roosts. Learn about the Crane Festival (November 11) and local conservation efforts.
