This is the itinerary we recommend most often to first-time guests who want culture without rushing the kingdom into a checklist. It matches the spine of our Classic Cultural Journey.
Day-by-day overview
Day 1 — Arrive Paro
Land at Paro (~2,200m), meet your guide, transfer to the hotel, light town walk or rest. Keep dinner early. Details on flights: getting to Bhutan. Altitude notes: acclimatization guide.
Day 2 — Tiger’s Nest
Full morning for Taktsang. Wear proper shoes; ponies help on the first climb if needed. Afternoon recover in Paro—Kyichu Lhakhang or a quiet hotel spa if legs are done. Tiger’s Nest guide.
Day 3 — Paro culture → Thimphu
National Museum, Rinpung Dzong, drive to Thimphu (~1 hour). Evening Memorial Chorten or market stroll depending on arrival time.
Day 4 — Thimphu
Buddha Dordenma, Tashichho Dzong (when open to visitors), craft school or takin preserve, and time for textile browsing. Pace for families: shorter museum blocks, longer lunch.
Day 5 — Dochu La → Punakha
Cross Dochu La (~3,100m) for chorten views when weather clears. Descend to Punakha: Punakha Dzong and a valley walk or suspension bridge. Punakha’s lower elevation often feels kinder after Thimphu.
Day 6 — Punakha valley → Paro
Chimi Lhakhang or riverside morning, drive back toward Paro. Buffer for weather delays or a festival add-on if dates align—see festivals guide.
Day 7 — Depart Paro
Morning buffer for shopping or a short visit, then airport transfer. Build flight schedules with visa clearance already in hand (visa guide).

Frequently asked questions
A strong first Bhutan week is Paro → Tiger’s Nest → Thimphu → Dochu La → Punakha → return to Paro—private guided, SDF-inclusive, with one buffer for rest or festival timing.
- Is 7 days enough for a first visit?
- Yes for the western highlights: Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha. Add nights if you want Bumthang, Phobjikha, or a trek.
- Should Tiger’s Nest be on day one?
- Better after a night in Paro when you can. Same-day hiking after a long flight raises fatigue and altitude stress.
- What does this week usually cost?
- Land packages vary by hotel band and season. Use our cost breakdown for 2026 ranges, then request an itemized quote for your dates.
- Can we customize this itinerary?
- Yes—swap a museum morning for a hot-stone bath, add a festival day, or soften the Tiger’s Nest hike. Private trips exist for that reason.
- Is this the same as Silverpine’s Classic Cultural Journey?
- It mirrors that route. See the live tour page for the current day-by-day product we operate and quote.
